Small Business Financial Planning

Building a successful business can create financial questions that didn't exist when you started.

How much cash should I keep in the business?

How much should I pay myself?

What should I do with excess profits?

Am I using the right retirement plan?

How much of my personal wealth should remain tied to the business?

At some point, making money and deciding what to do with it become two different problems.

Business Ownership Challenges | Financial Planning for Small Businesses | Retirement Planning for Business Owners

I've Worked Through These Questions Too

Before starting Ridge & Republic Financial, I spent years navigating the business ownership challenges outside of financial services. I've had to make crucial decisions regarding maintaining cash reserves, reinvesting in a business, managing variable income, paying taxes, investing profits, and determining how much money should be allocated to the business versus what should be earmarked for my family's long-term financial plan. These experiences ultimately drove my passion for financial planning, particularly focused on financial planning for small businesses. I understand the difference between analyzing a business on a spreadsheet and being the person responsible for making payroll, settling the tax bill, deciding whether to invest another $50,000 into the company, and figuring out what all of that means for your personal finances and retirement planning for business owners.

The Business and Personal Plan Are Connected

A business owner doesn't really have separate financial lives for their business and personal affairs. The decisions overlap significantly, making business ownership challenges all the more complex. For instance, how much you retain in the business directly impacts your ability to invest personally. Additionally, effective financial planning for small businesses plays a crucial role in your retirement strategy, as your retirement plan can influence your tax situation. The value of your business also shapes my perspective on your other investments. Moreover, the assets you accumulate outside of the business can ultimately alleviate your dependence on it. This is where I can help.

What we can discuss

Am I Using the Right Retirement Plan?

The decisions overlap significantly, making business ownership challenges all the more complex. For instance, how much you retain in the business directly impacts your ability to invest personally. Additionally, effective financial planning for small businesses plays a crucial role in your retirement strategy, as your retirement plan can influence your tax situation. The value of your business also shapes my perspective on your other investments. Moreover, the assets you accumulate outside of the business can ultimately alleviate your dependence on it. What Should I Do With Excess Cash?

What Should I Do With Excess Cash? How much cash does the business actually need to navigate common business ownership challenges? Additionally, how much should you maintain personally? We can examine cash reserves, upcoming business needs, and debt, while also considering retirement planning for business owners and how excess cash could be strategically invested outside the business as part of effective financial planning for small businesses.

How Do Taxes Affect My Decisions?

How Should I Invest Outside My Business?

How Do Taxes Affect My Decisions? Business income, retirement contributions, and investment income all play significant roles in financial planning for small businesses, and each can lead to various tax consequences. As we address business ownership challenges, we can identify how taxes influence your financial decisions and coordinate with your CPA or other tax professionals during retirement planning for business owners.

How Should I Invest Outside My Business? Can you manage my money for me? For many owners, business ownership challenges arise because their company is both their largest asset and biggest financial risk. Together, we can analyze your retirement planning for business owners, along with your retirement accounts, brokerage accounts, cash, and other investments, to see how they align with your overall financial planning for small businesses.

What Happens If Something Happens to Me? What happens to your family if you die or become unable to work? What will occur with the business during these challenging times? We can help address business ownership challenges by identifying financial risks, reviewing your existing insurance and other resources, and determining where additional financial planning for small businesses and retirement planning for business owners may be necessary.

When Can I Afford to Stop Working?

What Happens If Something Happens to Me?

When Can I Afford to Stop Working? Your business may generate the income that allows you to build wealth outside of it, even amidst common business ownership challenges. We can assist with financial planning for small businesses by modeling your investments, retirement accounts, Social Security, spending, and other resources. This will help estimate when working becomes optional for you—and what needs to happen between now and then as part of your retirement planning for business owners.

How I help

We start with the question you're trying to answer.

From there, I examine the relevant aspects of your financial life, gather the necessary information, and conduct a thorough analysis. This may involve comparing retirement planning for business owners, modeling various contribution amounts, reviewing your investments, analyzing retirement scenarios, or assessing how a specific decision might impact your taxes. While sometimes the answers are clear-cut, other times one question leads to multiple business ownership challenges that need addressing. The ultimate goal is to equip you with sufficient information to understand your options in financial planning for small businesses and make informed decisions.
